New 2019 LEGO Sets

What will LEGO bring us in 2019? No more Nexo Knights for sure, but will we get more Elves? More Crimes of Grindelwald and LEGO Movie II, no doubt, and new themes such as Forma, Overwatch and Toy Story. The 20th Anniversary of LEGO Star Wars. But what is "Confidential AL" and what about those Chinese sets? Is Junior now 4+? For answers to all these questions, and many more, read on...

Introduction

On December 6th, 2017, we published a New 2018 LEGO Sets blog post, mainly because we were adding new empty sets (without a part inventory) and we wanted to keep track of them. A simple to-do list, you might say. To our delight, that list became very popular; it has received some 67,000 views, been updated several times and we hope do to a final update next January, and turn it into a complete 2018 set overview.

This year we want to do the same. We have collected all the information and rumors about the upcoming LEGO Winter and Summer Waves, added predictions on possible numbers of sets based on previous years, and we can now proudly present a list of more then 200 sets that we think will be released in the next three to four month. We will regularly update this list, probably once a week until January, 2019, and once a month afterward, and we have software in place that will automatically insert links and images when we add new sets to our database.

Submitting Change Requests, Set Images and Inventories

Just like last year, we have decided to add the new 2019 sets prematurely, without parts inventory but with the 'Pending' tag, to allows our users to add new sets to say a Wanted List, even though the inventories for those sets are not yet available. Usually, it takes well into February for new Element IDs to become active, and for LEGO inventories to become available to us. In the mean time, we have some additional restrictions on submitting change requests, set images and part inventories in connection to new 2019 LEGO sets. Please refer to this News Forum post for more information.

As always, if you have any remarks or questions, or some imformation we need to add, feel free to comment below.

4+

Last year LEGO released some 18 sets within their Junior theme, a theme that was introduced on February 14, 2014, as "Easy to Build". Junior sets use larger bricks to make models both realistic and easy to build, but they usually fit into another main theme, such as Friends, Super Heroes, Ninjago, or Jurassic World. For 2019, LEGO has dropped the Junior theme name, and instead, these sets are released within the main themes, with an additional "4+" logo. A first example is set 76133-1 - Spider-Man Car Chase, which is now a Super Heroes > Marvel set.

Even though the red 4+ logo is clearly visible on the box, we always switch to model images when they become available, and then the difference between 4+ and regular sets will no longer be visible. We will be adding "4+" tags to all 4+ sets to overcome this problem. We currently have some 63 sets in the Junior theme (2014 - 2018) and it might be a good idea to do the same with those sets: move them to the regular themes and add a 4+ tag, but before we do so, we'd love to hear your opinion about that. (See all Junior sets.)

Elves

A few days ago I had a sneak preview of the upcoming 2019 LEGO catalog (it's on Youtube... -smile-); and we can now confirm that the Elves theme, that began in 2015, had finally ended. In the new catalog, after Friends, where Elves used to be, we now have a single page for Unikitty. This means that the larger retailers will start dumping the old Elves sets at the start of the next year, and there's a good chance that many of this year's sets will be available for a short period with a good discount. If you want to find out what Elves was all about, this could be a great opportunity.

Images & Posters

We only add sets to our database when LEGO officially releases a first image. That image is usually a box image. Then, when the set becomes available at the LEGO Shop, we replace the box image by a high resolution model image. That means that currently, for this list, we do not have images for all sets listed. Hopefully, in the next few weeks, we will be able to add more images.

Theme Posters

We are also experimenting with Theme Posters. These are thumbnails of much larger posters, which will open in a new browser tab when you click on the thumbnail, and can then be saved to you harddisk the usual way. If you click again, anywhere in the poster, it will zoom in to full size, and you will see all the details. Click again to zoom out. On the right you can a first example of a theme poster, the Full LEGO Nexo Knights Theme Poster. Hover with your cursor over the poster to see the actual size of the poster in pixels as well as the site of the image in MB. If you have a slow internet connection, loading the full HD images might take some time.

The New 2018 LEGO Sets blog post already contains a dozen of these posters, which will be updated in the near future, and we will be adding more posters to this blog post, when enough images are available. If you have any requests for specific posters, let us know, in the comment below.

Architecture

The roots of LEGO Architecture go way back to 1962, but the modern theme was introduced in 2008, and currently consists of about 43 sets. In 2018 we got two Skyline sets (Las Vegas and Sjanghai) and two Landmark sets (Great Wall of China and Statue of Liberty), and we expect something similar for 2019. The first two Skyline sets are already released: 21043-1 - San Francisco and 21044-1 - Paris. These two Skyline sets also feature in the 2019-1 LEGO catalog, on page 123, after Technic and Mindstorms. Two other Landmark sets are announced: 21045-1 - Trafalgar Square and 21046-1 - Empire State Building, which will measure between 30cm and 40cm in height. (See all Architecture sets.)

After the initial 17 sets, 2018 brought us 38 Brickheadz sets, and we expect at least two dozen new sets for 2019, with the LEGO Movie II characters as most probable candidates. Currently, 6 set numbers are already known. There is a rumor about Brickheadz ending this year, but that seems to have been denied by LEGO. (See all Brickheadz sets.)

The largest models are released within the sub-theme Expert. Additionally there is a series of Modular Buildings, that are considered to be a sub-theme of Creator.

We are currently in the process of reorganizing our theme tree, starting with the Creator theme. Read more, share your insights and voice your opinion about this in our News Forum.

Forma

On September 27, 2018, The LEGO Group announced "a new strategic approach that will help foster open innovation and test ideas and concept experiences through pilot projects, the first being LEGO FORMA on Indiegogo. A series of pilots are being planned to run in various locations and formats over the coming year to float new ideas, crowdsource others, and receive real-time feedback from consumers to evaluate whether concepts should be developed and scaled."

Forma is more of a creative project than a toy, and more about display than play. It wants to help young adults rediscover the joy of building that children possess and unleash their imaginations for a couple of hours. Forma started with a goal of 500 perks (pre-orders), but closed with 6,674 perks, some 1334% of target. As far as we know, Forma sets will only be shipped to UK customers. The new Forma series consist of 4 sets. (See all Forma sets.)

Friends

The LEGO Friends theme was first introduced in 2012, as the successor of Belville as the main girl-oriented theme. Friends is rather more story-based than most themes, depicting the lifestyles and adventures of the so-called minidolls Andrea, Emma, Mia, Olivia, and Stephanie. Some 300 sets have been released within the Friends theme, on average about 45 per year. In 2018 we've had 46 sets, including 9 issues of LEGO Friends magazine. Considering the succes of the theme, we predict at least 40 new sets for 2019. The Friends Winter Wave currently consists of 23 sets, with another 10 sets for the 2019 Summer Wave. Harry Potter (Wizarding World)

The LEGO Harry Potter theme; based upon the Harry Potter movies produced by Warner Brothers, and the original series of seven books by Joanne Rowling; was introduced in 2001 and initially ran until 2007. It then returned in 2010, together with the 7th Harry Potter movie, and ran until 2012. The theme was relaunched in 2018 in anticipation of the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (November 8, 2018, Paris; November 16, 2018, United Kingdom and United States. The LEGO Harry Potter theme currently consists of 81 sets, with 12 sets in the sub-theme Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.
The Summer 2019 wave of Wizarding World sets will probably contain at least 5 sets, and for 3 sets we have some more detailed information:
The Chamber of Secrets - This set will contain Harry Potter, Tom Riddle, Ginney Weasley, and Gilderoy Lockhart; it will be medium sized and will contain a brick built basilisk with a possible exclusively molded head.
Room of Requirement - This set will include Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Luna Lovegood, Seamus Finnigan, and Colin Creevey. There will also be a lot of play functions as this set will act as a scene with brick built statues of Death Eaters. A light brick might be included.
Diagon Alley - This set will be rather large and will have price range between $200 and $400. The set is rumored to include 12 minifigures including: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Hagrid, Ollivander, Ron Weasley, Fred Weasley, George Weasley, 2 Death Eaters, Molly Weasley, and 2 goblins. The set will be a compilation of three or even four different buildings.
Looking at the part counts of the four known sets, we might get different sets in the Winter Wave. (See all Harry Potter sets.)

Great shopping times ahead. I have to make some space in my tiny house.
I will absolutely have a lot of lego movie II sets. The technic Porsche is irresistable, looks much better than earlier cars imo. I get a somewhat uncanny feeling with regard to the forma-sets and also when looking at the minecraft sets. Only the pirate ship I might buy (what is that pirate mob doing there??? OK, it's for kids, I get it). Marvels spider crawler is awesome. No idea what overwatch is about, but some decent parts packs there. Star Wars is a little disappointing (more of the same) but the dewback vs pod is absolutely awesome.
