EDIT MODE

The year 2019 is already 2 months behind us. I wanted to take a final look back on the year. Nathan already wrote a blog on stuff that was going on from the developer and admin side of the site, like traffic, new features etc. JaredHinton wrote a blog on the admin's favorite sets of the year. I want to take a look at a very import aspect of Rebrickable: YOU. Without you, Rebrickable wouldn't exist. We count on you to submit and build MOCs, and help us keep the database up-do-date and correct errors. 2019 has been the busiest year for the admin team. With the help of some graphs and numbers, I want to show how much you all have helped us.

MOC Submissions

We had a record amount of MOCs submitted in 2019, nearly double compared to 2018, with 7043 MOCs in total. After a dip in April, the MOC submissions have been climbing through the year.
The MOC fans have been active as well. In total, 5,400+ Fan Photos have been submitted in 2019.

One way to see how popular MOCs are, is by looking at the number of Likes a MOC gets. Below is a list of the most liked MOCs of 2019, and a list of most liked MOCs ever.

Because a MOC submitted in January of course had more time to receive likes than a MOC submitted in December, I've made an alternative list, listing the MOCs with most likes received within 28 days after submission.

Another way to look at MOCs is the number of times the MOC is downloaded. Unfortunatly, we don't have control over the number of downloads for instructions that are hosted externally, only for Rebrickable-hosted. So a list of top 10 downloads would say little. What I can list, is the number of times users used the build-calculation to see if they have all the parts needed, indicating the have an interest in building it. Sets are also included in this list.

Set Submissions

Each year, LEGO produces new sets. We are also missing sets from older years. So we need a continuous flow of set submissions to stay up-to-date. In June, Simon published a review, in which he also talked about the possibility to submit B-models and sub-sets. That got a great response. We were flooded with submissions. In the graph below you see the set submissions of 2019, split into set-types. Below that, is a total submission amount by year.

And who are all these people who submitted this record amount? Here is a top 10 of set submitters (regardless of set-type). Disclaimer: JaredHinton, Simon and me (TobyMac) shouldn't be counted, as it's our job to add new sets.

Top Set Submitters 2019

2 Sletschin 614

5 TurboRatRods 222
6 astrowob 149
7 Simon 114
8 se1977 63
9 Heaventree 51
10 vinternet 27

Side-note: As you see, 2019 was technically not a record-breaking year here. There were more submissions in 2013 and 2014. But these can be shoved under the category 'start-up submissions'. In the starting years of Rebrickable, there were simply many more sets to be added. The top 6 set-submitters for those years are all admins, so correcting for that, 2019 was the biggest in user submissions:

Top Set Submitters 2013/2014
1 theskirrid 2087
2 DwBrick 1437
3 Nathan 1017
4 jantjeuh 896
5 sheo 533
6 Rebrickable (bot) 390

Sets Owned

JaredHinton wrote about the admin's most favorite sets of 2019. But what was your favorite set? The easiest way to see that, is look at the number of users that have a set in their set-list. (I know, this is not a perfect measure. You might like a set very much, but not have the budget/room to buy it, so it's not in your set list. But this is the best I can do with our numbers.) This is the top 25 of 2019 sets, and the top 25 of all sets:
Note: I was also curious about all other years, so I made a list of them too. Since that would be a long scroll here in the blog, I made a separate page for it here.

Part Submissions

Sets need parts. On that front, we have a small decline in submissions against 2018. The gap can explained by the actions of JaredHinton. In 2018, he started adding all missing Duplo sets. With this task, he also submitted around 1000 parts. Seen against the years outside 2018, 2019 is again record-breaking. The top 10 of part submitters:

5 thea 161
6 meregt 84
7 Arconoide 75
8 hallafors 60
9 Odurt 23
10 jjsiemens 23

It's hard to find a part, when the part has no image. In 2017, Rebrickable introduced the possibility to upload photos for parts. In 2019, we're close to the amount of approved submissions of 2018.

Change requests

No database is 100% error-free. To help us get closer to that 100%, you can submit Change Requests. And here too, you have been submitting in record number! August was our busiest month this year.
Note: I've excluded rejected Change Requests. Those were about 7% of the total submissions, steady over all years.

And like the set submissions, I have a top 10 list of people that have kept us busy in 2019. In total, 417 different users have submitted 1 or more Change Requests.

Thank you a lot for this article, and thank you a lot for rebrickable! Now I can't do without it, definitively. I have a little suggestion: in addition to the "Most MOCs submitted" table, it would be interesting to get a table that highlights not only the number of MOCs but their size in number of pieces. For example by multiplying the number of MOCs by the number of pieces, so that a designer who proposed 100 MOCs of 100 pieces each would be at the same level as a designer who proposed 10 MOCs of 1000 pieces each. For a future post?

I am a newbie to the Lego community. In December I bought the 42024 Technic set as a Christmas present to my Grandson, he's only 7 so I thought I'd build it before handing it over. I loved it so much I bought the same set for myself. Last year I was devastated at having to take early retirement due to ill health. My doctor suggested taking up a hobby to take my mind off the inevitable, and my Grandson said Lego was the 'cool' option. NOW I'M WE'RE HOOKED !!
I found this site when searching the net for MOC's. It's awesome. I'm on here every day and spend hours building and taking apart models. I only have 3 sets and therefore limited to what I can build. The feature where you can find what models you can build is not only, in my opinion, the best feature on this site, but the best feature on the internet !!
I would like to thank all the Designers for sharing their thoughts, designs and plans with us less experienced builders, but most of all I would like to personally thank you TobyMac (and the team) for bringing Rebrickable to the public domain. You have given me a chance to make some marvelous memories with my Grandson. I am so glad to see that the site goes from strength to strength.

What is the difference between a set a subset and a bmodel ? Thanks !
    • 1 month, 3 weeks ago TobyMac Level 33 Inventory Admin ADMIN
I could swear I answered this this morning, but I can't find the reply anymore.
A sub-set is a smaller part of the complete set. For instance, some Speed Champions come with 2 cars. Each car can be submitted as a sub-set.
A b-model is an official design by LEGO that can be build with the set. When a MOC design uses only the parts of 1 set, it's called an Alternate, also sometime referred to as c-model. The difference is the designer.
If a b-model consists of multiple builds, it can also be split up into sub-sets...

I've been collecting Lego since the mid 80s, and I found Rebrickable about 2 years ago, looking at MOCs. I thought it was neat and would come back every now and then to browse, never looking any deeper into what this database actually was. When I realized that personal inventory was possible, I immediately created an account and got to work. It's been about 2 months, and with hundreds more sets and thousands of parts to go, I'm no where even close to done. This thing you've created is incredible. I'm rather in awe of its scale and complexity, and I'm still scratching at the possibilities. Thank you all for the long and often overlooked hours you have put into this. I'm honored to now be a part of it.

Well done, people. I can't thank you enough for the countless hours it's taken to compile all this information. I've only been a member of this site for a little over a year, but I now understand why I enjoy the site so much. I look forward to being a long-term member, and I want to extend a heartfelt thank you.
