It's been a while since we ran a competition. So to make up for that, we have come up with something a bit different. The new Top MOC Competition will be a continuous month-by-month award to the most liked MOC on Rebrickable. To make this as fair (and automated) as possible, the rules are a little different to normal...

Each Round will typically go for one calendar month to keep things simple. A Round is just the period during which eligible MOCs are competing against each other. At the end of the Round, all eligible MOCs will be compared and the one with the highest Score will win. To give you an idea of how many MOCs you will compete against, there are currently 100-200 new MOCs approved on Rebrickable each month.

To get started, the first Round will actually run for two months or no new MOCs would be in the running for the first prize!

To enter the competition, simply submit your MOCs as per usual. Those with the most number of "Likes" at the end of each Round will win a prize. Everyone who has an approved MOC is automatically eligible to win (excluding admin-submitted and paid MOCs). There are no limits on the MOCs you submit, it is entirely up to the tens of thousands of Rebrickable users to decide what they like best. The more appeal your MOC has to as wide an audience as possible (including easy to use building instructions!), the more chance you have of winning.

The number of Likes accumulated during the first 14 days (2 full weeks) will determine the MOC's Final Score. This is so that MOCs can be submitted at any time of the month and still have the same chance as any others. A MOC less than 14 days old will not have a Final Score yet and will not be eligible for a Round until it is.

At the end of the Round, all eligible MOCs that have reached 14 days old and have not yet been checked in a previous Round will be compared and the one with the highest Score will win.

Example Timeframe

  • 2015-11-22 - Your submitted MOC is approved

  • 2015-11-22 -> 30 - As your MOC gains Likes you can watch the rankings

  • 2015-11-30 - End of Round, but your MOC is not eligible for judging yet (as it's only 8 days old)

  • 2015-12-01 -> 06 - Your MOC continues (hopefully) to gain Likes

  • 2015-12-06 - Your MOC reaches 14 days old and the number of Likes it has is saved as it's Final Score

  • 2015-12-31 - End of Round, your MOC is now eligible and is judged against other eligible MOCs

The first Round will run from 1st December 2015 to 31st January 2016, and will consider all MOCs that reach 28 days old in that period. Unfortunately MOCs reaching 28 days old before this announcement will not be eligible (we had to start somewhere!).

An up to date listing of the current rankings is available. It consists of two tables - those MOCs eligible for the current round vs those that will reach 14 days in the next round.

The number of Likes displayed next to a ranked MOC will continue to climb until it reaches 14 days at which point it will become it's Final Score.

Liking MOCs

Even if you are not a MOC designer, you can participate in the competition by Liking MOCs that appeal to you. Of course, you are encouraged to try and build them to see how well you like them :) I would suggest you consider all aspects of the MOC before Liking it - e.g. is it an alternate build? does it have easy to follow building instructions?

To keep an eye on the newest MOCs being submitted, you can use either:

  1. A new page showing all eligible MOCs for the current round

  2. New MOCs section at /home

  3. New MOCs section at /mocs

  4. RSS feed for new sets

  5. Change your email settings to be notified of new MOCs using a threshold of 0%, using the frequency you are comfortable with.

There will be one prize per Round for first place. Most Rounds, the prize will be a LEGO set worth approx €50-100. This will vary from month to month, based on funds and availability. The winner will be able to choose from a list of potential sets from the shop.LEGO.com site. At times I may put a flagship set or two up for the prize instead. The winning MOC/designer will also be promoted throughout the site, increasing their visibility.

To make up for the lack of competitions recently, and the longer duration of the first Round, the initial prize (December 2015 - January 2016) will be a LEGO set of your choosing worth up to €200!

Update: The timeframe for accumulating Likes has reduced from 28 days to 14 days.

Fineprint time...

  1. The first Round will run from 1st December 2015 until 31st January 2016.
  2. The 14 days starts from when your MOC is approved and made public (i.e. not when you submit it although we try our best to approve them quickly).
  3. MOCs can only compete in a single Round. MOCs that are deleted then re-submitted at a later date will not be approved.
  4. Designers can submit as many MOCs as they like during a single Round.
  5. Only MOCs with freely available instructions will be eligible for entry.
  6. If your MOC wins a prize I will contact you at your registered email address from [email protected] You must respond within 7 days of sending the email with the requested details (which will include a delivery address, real name and phone number) or your prize will be forfeit. If you know you have won and have not received an email, contact us at [email protected]
  7. If the winner declines or forfeits the prize, the designer of the MOC with the next highest Score will be contacted, and so on.
  8. In the event of a tie, the admin team will determine a winner based on the quality of building instructions submitted, and other factors.
  9. The winner may choose a number of smaller LEGO sets as long as their combined value does not exceed the prize value. However, no more than 3 sets may be chosen to reduce delivery costs.
  10. The prize value is based on the price listings at the German LEGO online store.
  11. Once you have won a prize, you will not be eligible to win another prize for a period of 12 months.
  12. A Rebrickable user account can only Like a MOC once. If there are multiple accounts from the same IP address, only the first account will be counted.
  13. If we suspect vote-rigging of a MOC, the MOC may be disqualified at the admin's discretion.
  14. MOCs submitted by Admins are not eligible.
  15. The MOC must be designed by the submitter to be eligible.

I'm about to join this interesting contest, but I have one question... Are not-physical (LDD projects not yet physically built) allright to enter the contest? Thanks :)

The simplest way is probably downloading Lego Digital Designer, a program made by Lego to create digital model. Just recreate your physical model with it and that's enought to upload your moc. If you want to go on and create a proper building instruction manual, there are many options..

Cool, I was actually just thinking about the old alternate model contests recently. Looking forward to seeing how this one plays out!

      Nice one :)
And it seems you have the prize in your hands already ;) and highly deserved, that is one great

Haha, thanks, but I wouldn't count on that. Now that there is some meaning to the likes I expect they will be used a lot more! :)
